Gatekeeper and System 7 Pro

Since the release of Apple's System 7 Pro, questions of compatibility like the following item having been appearing in my email and on the net:

Unfortunately, other people are having problems with Gatekeeper under System 7 Pro. (If the number of mail messages I've received on this subject is indicative, it may not be very many people, but it's enough.)

Some of these people have indicated that the cure in their cases was to grant the File(Other) privilege to the System 7 Pro "Catalogs Extension" (whatever that is).

Of course, if Gatekeeper is in Notify & Veto mode and Catalogs Extension requires that privilege during the boot process, and doesn't cope gracefully with not having it (Gatekeeper always returns error codes when it vetoes operations, BTW), crashes during startup could result. This is why Gatekeeper is distributed in Notify Only mode by default, and is part of why the installation instructions stipulate that existing Gatekeeper Prefs files should be trashed while installing new versions of Gatekeeper.

I can't say that this is the source of the conflict you've encountered, but it's worth looking into.

Aggravatingly, I tried to get "Catalogs Extension" into the default privilege list for Gatekeeper some time ago. Unfortunately, either I made a typographic mistake and entered the privilege as "Catalog Extension" (note the singular), or Apple changed the name of the extension somewhere between the time testers reported the need for the privilege and System 7 Pro was actually released. In either case, the missing "s" foiled my attempt to get this into the default privilege list. :-(

This may be the whole conflict, or just part of it. I don't know. I'd like to look into this, but without a copy of System 7 Pro there's no way to do so. Anybody out there got a free, legal copy of the release version that they can send me?
